a4uexpo thanks

In no particular order…

To Matt and the Existem/a4uexpo team – For putting on another top notch a4uexpo. I know how stressful the few days are for you guys (especially around 9am on Day 1 when the printers died just as everyone arrived en mass expecting delegate badges.. not to mention the power cut!)

To ExCel itself – The new venue is much improved on the old Platinum Suite of previous years – lighter, brighter, more spacious, and not as tired looking. There was ample space to mill around and chill on the comfy sofas between sessions.

To Mark and the Existem AM crew – For keeping me fed and watered (ok.. stella’d) for the last couple of days. The EAM Loft was the place to be for the after-party (and pre-party) experience, with Beer, Pizza, Beer, All-day Breakfasts and Beer on the menu (did I mention beer?)

To Karl and Ben from Conversion Rate Experts – For two fantastic sessions that gave me pages of notes, tips and ideas to improve my sites performance. I was really hoping that they would have had enough time to critique one of my sites that is in desperate need of improvement in their “conversion clinic” session – however it seemed that 20 other people had the same idea, and sadly their allotted time ran out long before they got to laugh at, erm I mean slag off, err critique my efforts

To Affilinet – For kindly sponsoring my a4uexpo ticket, providing me with regular coffee hits, and persuading me to bite the bullet and take part in a panel session.. which leads me to…

To everyone who attended both my panel sessions – I mentioned last week my fear of public speaking, and was amazed to find that the nerves didn’t really appear until the session actually got underway (I probably thought I could always back out at any point up till then! Whilst listening to my fellow panellists Kirsty and Nick making their points (and trying desperately to think of something insightful, useful or just desperately trying to avoid making an arse of myself), I felt sick with nerves, but eventually settled, and having looked at a photo taken from the audience, I actually look like I’m enjoying it!

I’ll probably do a panel session again, as long as it’s a fun subject that I’m comfortable with (I felt that the “Role of the networks and Industry Bodies in shaping the user experience” session I did later in the day was a little above my paygrade, but I think I bluffed my way through it.. just!

To Dan @ CJ – For persuading me to do said session.. Even though I found it tough going, it was worthwhile pushing myself outside of my comfort zone, and got me thinking about some in-depth matters and gave me a good insight to the “other side” of AM.

To Webgains – for the speed networking event, which was fun. but very tiring.. oh, and for the iPad that I’m sure you’re about to tell me I won in the raffle ;)

To the FOUR guys from Mattress Man – who thought it would be a good idea to ALL take part in the speed networking, denying other merchants (at least 3) slots and flooding what was otherwise a good event.

To the guy at the speed networking.. - Who said “I tried selling retail products as an affiliate but struggled to make any money. Now I make a fortune, writing eBooks about how to make money online” – That’s the best laugh I’ve had in a while!

To Affiliate Future – For Rum ‘O’ Clock – now an institution at expo.

To the networks, merchants etc that are going to send me prizes (especially iPads!) – in advance of course.. I made sure I entered EVERY stand competition this year – I am determined to get an iPad!

To whoever had the idea of ordering a cup of tea at 2am on the last night
– After mucho Stella, Guinness and Champagne, a good old cup of tea really hit the spot!

And last, but by no means least..

To everyone else I’ve forgotten to mention - I blame the alcohol for making my memory somewhat hazy!

Who would YOU like to thank?

Where did I put the Pro Plus?

a4uexpo 2009It’s that time of year again, when affiliates arm themselves with business cards, Pro Plus and Headache pillls, dragging themselves the length of the country to London’s ExCel centre for the annual a4uexpo. It’s going to be a very different experience for me this year, not only as I’ll be attending on my own for the first time (It was difficult to justify the cost of bringing a colleague this year), nor because many of my affiliate buddies have opted to give it a miss this year, making it a less social event for me than in previous years.

No, the main thing that’s going to be different for me is the fact that I’ve agreed to sit on two panel sessions this year, having previously declared that there’s no way in hell you’d get me up on stage with a microphone in my hand. I suffer from awful stage fright you see, and have a massive fear of public speaking. However the nice people at Affilinet pitched the idea of a panel session to me that seemed to be along the lines of the “modcast” that a few of us did with Fraser back in 2007 – just some affiliate buddies chewing the fat about the topics of the day. That didn’t seem like too much pressure, so I agreed to my first ever session, at a4uexpo (or anywhere else for that matter!).

I’m pleased to be on the panel alongside fellow affiliates Kirsty and Nick and withPaul from Affilinet making up the non-affiliate bods and keeping us in check, it should be a fun session – even if it is at lunchtime, so expect a lot of munching and nom nom nom’ing during proceedings!

I then managed to get roped into doing a much heavier session, entitled “Role of Networks or Industry Bodies in Shaping the User Experience”. Whilst a much heavier topic, it’s something that I feel passionate about, and it’s still only a panel session, so I’m having to overcome the nerves twice in one day – I will be in desperate need of a drink by the end of those two sessions, so might head over to AF’s stand to see if Rum ‘O’ Clock has kicked off yet ;)

I’ll also be taking part in the “speed networking” event at the end of Day 1, getting the chance to say “what’s your name and where do you come from?” to 25 merchants, and hopefully without managing to bore people stupid about Easy Content Units and Link Builder.. (well if I do bore you.. at least it’s only for 2 minutes.. think about the poor people who will have sat through an hour long session with me earlier in the day!)

If you’re going to expo and want to say hi, meet up or (always a popular choice) buy me a beer, then the easiest way is to stalk me on Twitter.

Back in UK & Getting Ready for A4U Expo

I’ve landed back in the mother country, my accent has become so Scottish my husband no longer understands me, and it’s T-Minus 3 days and counting till this year’s A4U Expo London kicks off!

Win a Ticket

If you haven’t got a ticket, Kieron Donoghue is running a competition over on his blog which closes end of play today (8th October). Just drop a line into his comments box and tell him what session you would most like to see and why you deserve to win the ticket. The comment he likes the most will win.

Only 11 comments there so far, and a bit of sucking up going on about Kieron’s own session – “Making it Happen : On a Shoe String Budget” which is running on day two. Can’t blame the suck-ees mind you, it does sound like a very interesting one and I’d say I’ll most likely be dropping in on that one myself.

Definately worth entering Kieron’s comp – so get your skates on and get over to his blog to enter now!

Speaking of Sessions Featuring Affiliates…

I’ve gotten myself onto the panel for “Becoming an Affiliate: A Reality Check” at the Expo Theatre on Day One. Turn up at 13.15 to 14.15 to see the goings on and ask us some questions.

I’m hoping for an interesting session so don’t be shy.

Don’t Forget To Say Hello

If you see me around I hope you’ll come on over and say hi. I’ve been starved of affiliate networking for two years now and really want to chat to as many people as possible. I’m a total chatterbox and love meeting new people!

Boring Affiliate Holiday Snap Bit

We stopped over in Bangkok for 3 nights on the way here and stayed at Lebua State Tower. We had a very nice suite right up on the 58th floor – I did feel a bit sick out on the balcony though. Was mind bendingly high! Thanks to Chris Johnson of Existem for the suggestion, they don’t only do conferences they do travel advice as well.

Here’s some pictures of what I’ve been up to whilst keeping my promise to myself to stay away from the blog.

The beautiful (but frighteningly high) view from our room! Thai approach to balcony safety standards didn't help ;)

Revisiting our backpacking days and trying out some street food on Khao San Road.

Renting a long tail boat and stopping to feed some fish at a temple along the Bangkok canals.

Visiting the very beautiful Wat Arun.

OK, that’s enough of boring you with our holiday snaps – I’m extremely excited about the Expo and can’t wait to tell all you guys about the goings on and interesting sessions I’ve seen next week.

Have a good weekend :)

I was going to do an a4uexpo review, but…

a4uexpo 2009 reviewI stumbled across GeoffBlog’s review, and agreed with pretty much every word of it, so rather than post the same things, I thought I’d just link to the post (maybe I could do a session next year on entitled “How to be a very tired, still-slightly-hungover and thoroughly lazy blogger”) instead, and bullet point the main things that stood out for me:

  • The food was much, much improved on previous years – Chilli, Pizza, Nachos, Curry, Fish and Chips. Spot on, and no hungry affiliates this year!
  • The sessions weren’t that great – if you’d been to the previous 2 expos, you’d pretty much seen the same content a couple of times! not sure what you can do about that though – There’s only so many ways you can skin the “how to rank on Google better” cat, and I can’t think of a session that I’d like to see next year off the top of my head – Perhaps next year I’ll leave the sessions to the newbies and just do the networking.
  • The o2 club was really, really disappointing – the o2 itself is pretty stunning visually, and a really cool place. The club wasn’t – it was dark, dingy and uninviting. The promised “quiet area for networking” didn’t happen, so you couldn’t hear a word anyone was saying, and they kept running out of beer! we’d had enough after about an hour so grabbed a couple of taxis back to the Novotel where a brilliant, chilled relaxed evening was had. We weren’t the only ones either, as more and more taxis full of affiliates kept arriving as word got out, and there must have been 60 or 70 affiliates there by midnight!
  • The networking to be had was top quality. For an affiliate that’s based nearly 200 miles from London, it’s not often I can get to chat face-to-face with networks, merchants and other affiliates. a4uexpo gets them all in the same place for a couple of days, meaning I get to chat with almost everyone (apologies to those I didn’t have time to speak with – I’ll catch you next year!)
  • The Twitter wall was a brilliant addition, and kept me entertained throughout – it was useful to see where the good sessions were, what others were doing, or for the daily announcement of “Rum O’ Clock” by the AF team :)
  • Forcing affiliates to fend for themselves food-wise on the middle night was a good idea I think, as we had the opportunity to go off somewhere with affiliate buddies and have a good chat/laugh over a brilliant meal – again not something we can do very easily at any other time of the year – Many thanks also to Clarke at Paid on Results for footing the bill for the “all you can eat meat fest” – more Chicken Hearts anyone?
  • As usual, I’m so, so tired after the event – It’s a mental couple of days, which has huge impact on our Industry as a whole – You leave full of ideas, contacts and deals, but top of the “to-do list” for me right now is to catch up on some sleep (and I managed to have around twice as much sleep as last year!)
  • Roll on a4uexpo 2010!

    The a4uexpo 2009 Survival Guide

london excel - home of a4uexpoSo that time is very nearly upon us again when the great and the good in Affiliate Marketing descend upon London Village for three nights and two full days of networking, education, and maybe a tiny bit of drinking until 5am.

As a veteran of the previous two expos, I thought I’d share some essential tips with you to ensure you make the most of a4uexpo 2009..

    Pack the right equipment..
pro plusEssential items to survive a three-night, two-day conference include a decent supply of Paracetamol, ProPlus and business cards. I wouldn’t worry too much about paper or pens, as they are usually provided for you within the delegate pack, and if not, there’s bound to be a promotional pen or twenty lying around that you can lay your hands on.

It’s worth remembering that you’re out on a limb somewhat at ExCel, so it might be an idea to take some snacks and drinks with you (you can always leave them in your hotel room) – Food and drink is provided at regular intervals throughout expo, but when you’re starving hungry and fighting 300 other hungry people for tiny bowls of salad as they arrive 10 at a time, you’ll be thankful you nibbled on a cereal bar a few hours earlier ;)

    Prepare Properly..
be prepared! There’s no reason whatsoever to wander around ExCel aimlessly looking for people you might want to speak with – The a4uexpo team have provided a complete list of all the exhibitors, sessions and attendees, so you can plan exactly who you want to speak to, what sessions you’re going to, and whose stands you’re going to visit. You’ll get much more out of the conference this way, and avoid sitting through boring sessions and speaking to hundreds of irrelevant people.

The “appointment” system of the last couple of expos appears to have been dropped (looking at last years, it wasn’t that greatly used), so there might be a small wait to speak to people on the more popular stands. We’re not exhibiting ourselves, but if you fancy a chat with me or Jason about Easy Content Units or anything else we do, the best thing to do is drop me a line via Twitter (@lammo77), as I’ll be tweeting live from expo.

Don’t be afraid to speak up..
a4uexpo 2009If you’re in a session, and don’t understand a point being made, don’t be afraid to ask a question – You’ll probably find that ten other people are thinking the same but are too nervous to put their hand up. The speakers love questions too – It’s much easier to answer a question than it is to think of something interesting to say yourself!

On a similar note, don’t be afraid to introduce yourself to other attendees – affiliates are (mostly) a pretty friendly bunch.. There’s no cliques here, and most affiliates get one really well and are happy to chat with anyone, regardless of how long they’ve been an affiliate or how successful they are deemed to be. Come and say hello – we don’t bite!

    Pace yourself..
expo 2009I will not be naming names, but a certain person who works at an agency caused much amusement last year on the middle night, being completely unable to co-ordinate his hand in order to pick up the drink that was in front of him – The look of sheer frustration and confusion on his face was priceless. Then there’s the network employee who fell asleep on the final night – his colleagues had abandoned him and he had to be put in a cab and sent on his way. Or the handful of people who seem to throw up in the toilets every year…

Yes, it’s a free bar – everyone does tend to like a drink at these events, but if you’re getting this wasted, then you’re not going to be doing much business are you? And isn’t that why you’re going to expo?

    Send me to bed..
send me to bed! This is my first expo since Little Lammo was born, and I’m determined to make the most of the event. For me there’s an added bonus this year – the opportunity to have a good 6 or 7 hours uninterrupted sleep for three nights!

I’m therefore imploring anyone who sees me in the hotel bar anytime after 1am to please send me to my bed, rather than letting me chew the fat until 5am every night like I did last year!

Any other tips you’ve got to share?

So What’s On The Agenda for A4UExpo? Day 2

The biggest problem with A4UExpo Day 2 is not that it follows Day 1, but that Day 1 and Day 2 sandwich the Breakout Party, which this year will be at Inc Club in The O2. Hangovers, lack of sleep and seminars are not a good combo, so a top tip for the early talks on Day 2 is arm yourself with a bottle of water, Aspirins and sit near the exit!

Thankfully Day 2 starts a little bit later than Day 1 and for affiliates “Killer Link Building Strategies” sounds the best of the “should I stay in bed with my hangover and watch Jeremy Kyle or go to a talk instead” time slot sessions. Link building is something we’ve never gotten into so learning “how to build high-value link targets and how to acquire them” may be useful as could be the Link Swap Shop proposed by Joe!

The next set of sessions is a mixed bag. If I was a paid search affiliate then Sri Sharma’s talk on “Strategies To Earn More From Your Affiliate Paid Search Campaign” would definitely be worth a look. “A View From Across Silicon Valley” with the co-founder of Commission Junction, Per Pettersen and a panel session on “Barriers to Conversion” make up the rest of the talks. A cup of coffee and a leisurely look round the Expo Exhibition may just win in the what to do at this time stakes though.

Deciding what to attend after lunch is going to be a tough decision.

The Extreme SEO Moderated Debate was a good one last year and should be a fun and informative session again this year. However, the panel are up against “Start-up And Launch Strategy” with Seatwave and some music sites called Spotify and Sharemyplaylists – never heard much about either of them – explaining how they did what they did.

“Beat Your Merchants At Their Own Game” is the other talk in this group which judging by the blurb will be full of merchants making sure their affiliates aren’t getting the edge on them via Adwords – one for the PPC people!

Apart from roads, hospitals, sanitation, voucher code management and Matt Bailey what has The IAB done for us? would be a much better title for a talk than “Regulation, Promotion and Education – What Can The IAB Affiliate Council Do For You?”. However, do make sure you catch Matt explaining what The IAB is all about and how you can also get involved in the 13.30 to 14.15 slot.

If you like the sound of Matt’s voice then good news as he’s on again at 14.30 with “Adding Value Within The Purchase Chain” but sadly he’s up against the “Affiliate Apocalypse Panel”, which sounds the better option. This should be a fascinating session as it will cover issues like transparency and the last click rules. Helen Southgate, Duncan Popham and Seth Richardson are the doom-mongers panel.

One of the most popular talks at previous Expos has been “Meet the Super Affiliates” and you can expect a packed room again this year when the 4pm talks kick off. Expect to hear something about a music sharing site once or twice as DJ Mix Tape himself, Kieron, is on hand as the panel moderator. This year he’s joined by Tina Judic, Sri Sharma and Philip Wilkinson (who I vaguely remember emailing a few times back in the early days of Loquax?).

Day 2 ends with a choice of two sessions, one about domain names and the other about writing killer proposals and selling yourself to merchants. Usually by 5pm though a power nap awaits as there’s the Ice Party to come and close what hopefully will be another successful A4U Event.

I wonder if Matt Le Tissier will be there this year?

So What’s On The Agenda for A4UExpo? Day 1

The agenda for this year’s A4UExpo is all but complete and now that it’s only about a month away now is a good time to start having a look through what’s on offer and decide which sessions you’d like to attend. The more organised you are the better – especially if you’re planning meetings with affiliates or merchants – as you don’t want to be missing your “must see” seminar.

As ever Matt and the Existem team have put together an intriguing mix of talks aimed at merchants and affiliates.

The first highlight is the lack of keynote speaker at the start of the event. Praise be to the affiliate marketing gods! I can’t even remember who did it last year, but it really didn’t electrify the audience. The only downside is there’s no “welcome intro” by Matt, but I’m sure he’ll say a few words at some point during proceedings.

So this year it’s straight into the nitty gritty with talks about Red Letter Days (sounds a great idea, but I’m afraid I’m out), affiliate marketing and media (sounds merchanty) and SEO strategies with Dave Naylor (recommended as Dave is an interesting speaker).

Following Dave is one of the stand out talk titles of the whole two days is “Are Networks Dying?”! It’s a panel session and includes a network, an agency, a publisher and an advertiser. It promises to be an intriguing session and hopefully discussion. From our experience, network earnings have been getting worse whilst independents improve.

One network has gone from best earner to worst performer in less than 12 months. It does make you wonder if it’s just us or a reflection of other affiliates across the board, so this session will be of interest.

Sessions for affiliates and with affiliates on the panel are always busy, and “The Affiliate Doctors Live!” involving Duncan Jennings, Kieron Donoghue and Chris Garrett shouldn’t be an exception. They will be offering “frank advice on issues within affiliate marketing, start-up strategy, conversion, blogging and SEO”. Sounds good, but have to say I’d like to see other affiliates involved (Lee, Kirsty, Joe, Matt, A Struggling or Successful Newbie?) as well as the usual suspects.

The next “sounds good” session involves Kevin Edwards and Michelle Boxall (Affiliate Window) – “The Truth Will Out: Disproving Common Misconceptions In Affiliate Marketing”. Although the blurb says that this session is aimed “at affiliate managers and merchants” I’d have thought that affiliates would also be interested in knowing the truth about the the myths and legends of voucher code sites, cashbacks and brand bidders.

For newbies Nadeem’s “12 Biggest Affiliate Marketing Mistakes” could be worth checking out in the 4pm slot, but for those who have probably made them already then “Advanced Site Architecture And Product Feed SEO” with Judith Lewis looks a good alternative option. Judith got rave reviews via Twitter about her Thinkvisibility session so hopefully this will be more of the same (plus even more hopefully free chocolate).

The final session of the day will probably be “You want to Tweet What!?”! This could be the weirdest session of the whole expo as by this time most of the delegates would have been on Twitter at least once to say they’re at A4UExpo. If Thinkvisibility was anything to go by, no one was listening to the talks as they were too busy Twittering to each other :)

Still, it sounds a fun session and so hopefully we’ll all learn how to tweet better in time for Day 2 (coming later).

If there’s a good session on Day 1 I’ve not mentioned why not leave a comment and say why it’s worth attending?
